We arrived at San Jose International Airport too late to get a bus to La Fortuna, and since we didn't have time to waste in San Jose (street map here), we went to La Fortuna by taxi (3 hour trip, $80). To book one, just exit the airport and ask for prizes. Bargain a little over the first price offered.

We were not able to see the lava of the vulcano since it seems to be perpetually covered in clouds, but there are hikes that go pretty close to the top and also night hikes when lava is easier to see.
Booked our next day: Multiadventure.
We booked a mixture of zipline, horse riding and rappeling with Arenal Mundo Aventura. Drinks and a sandwich were included, as well as transportation to & from the hotel.
Then we had dinner in one of the typical places and had some drinks in one of the local bars.
